Southeastward New York and right beside Manhattan lays a long stretch of land called the Long Island. It is both the largest and the longest island in all of US, and includes four counties: Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn. While the latter two are commonly linked to New York City being boroughs, Nassau and Suffolk are suburban areas and are generally what many people only know what Long Island comprises of (to create distinction).
Being an island situated on the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island experiences a climate similar to many coastal areas: warm and humid summers and cold winters. Rain and storm is usual as with the whole New York and its neighboring areas, and once in a while, severe thunderstorms strike the island as well. Long Island is also susceptible to hurricane attacks and have encountered extremely strong ones probably once in a decade for the past five.
Long Island boasts a lot of structures that withstand its coastal climate and these include the Brooklyn Bridge, the Brooklyn Museum among others scattered throughout the island, and the Mets’ new baseball stadium – the Citi Field. The Coney Island is also classic attraction that has drawn millions of visitors to Long Island from all corners of the country and the world; as new parks like the water park Splish Splash as well as several historic sites aspire to achieve. There is also the Oheka Castle in Huntington and the numerous huge and elegant homes of the rich and famous at The Hamptons.
Long Island’s beautiful beaches are a hit to many Americans throughout the year, with its long stretch of fine sands and the relaxing atmosphere the pounding waves and the cool breeze brings. Among the most famous Long Island beaches include the Jones Beach, Main Beach, Coopers Beach and the Sea Cliff Beach, to name some. Long Island also features vineyard after another at the East End, most of them offering a variety of interesting activities like wine tasting and biking tours.
There are lots of things to do and a multitude of sights to see in Long Island. Tour the lighthouses or walk through towns. See the island on a helicopter or get on a trolley ride just for the sake of it. Surf the waves or go whale watching off Montauk Point. Surely you are bound to find something you will definitely enjoy and cherish.
Long Island is as fun as most islands in the world despite its vulnerable climate. But probably it is because of this aspect that this island exudes such exciting factor and irresistible appeal.
